Series co-ordinator: Chris Rostron 01663 764799
A series of 5 events on Thursday evenings starting on November 10th.
The events are SCORE events with a time allowance of either 40 or 60 minutes, using specially drawn maps. The control sites will mostly be items of street furniture (lamp posts, telegraph poles, hydrants, green boxes etc etc) and evidence of your visit will involve noting down some (hopefully obvious) identification mark on an answer sheet supplied at the start (those familiar with the Countryside Score events will already know the type of thing). There will be NO O kites and, although we plan to use SI timing for the start and finish, there will be no SI boxes at individual controls.
The controls will have a range of points value (unlike the Countryside Score where all controls have equal value) - adding an additional dimension to route choice and planning. As usual in score events, there will be penalties for exceeding the time limit.
Essential equipment : a reliable watch, compass, dibber (available for hire if necessary), pen/pencil (maps and answer sheets will be printed on waterproof paper), torch / headtorch (there will be a limited number available to borrow for the event) and high visibility clothing.
You may run individually - or in pairs; however, under 16s MUST be accompanied by a parent / guardian - and they must stay together at all times - ie no shadowing allowed; 16 and 17 year olds may run unaccompanied, but must have written consent from parent / guardian.
As the events form a league, scores from each event will be added together to reveal the eventual winners; your best 3 scores from the 5 events will produce your overall total.
All the events will be based in Pubs - offering food at reasonable prices, if you wish to stay for a chat and post-event analysis (highly recommended!)
Registration opens 6.00pm; Last Start 7.30pm.
Fee £2.00 per person (£1.00 for juniors).
Advice and instruction will be available. Families and small groups will be very welcome.
These events are designated as Night Street League Events in the Schedule.
The Night street league flyer gives details of all the events in the series.
Series co-ordinator: Grahame Crawshaw 0145 786 6264
Most events offer a range of courses classified by length and difficulty, ranging from White or Yellow (the simplest) up to Blue or Brown. Local Events generally have a more limited range of courses than Regional Events.
The following table is a guide for newcomers to orienteering to help you select an appropriate colour coded course :
| Course | Difficulty | Length (km) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| WHITE | very easy | 1.0 - 1.5 | especially for very young novices |
| YELLOW | easy | 1.5 - 2.5 | suitable for novices |
| ORANGE | fairly easy | 2.5 - 3.5 | for adult novices and teenagers |
| LIGHT GREEN | moderate | 2.5 - 3.5 | for those with some experience |
| GREEN | difficult | 3.5 - 5.0 | for experienced orienteers |
| BLUE | difficult | 5.0 - 7.5 | for experienced orienteers |
| BROWN | difficult | 7.5 - 10.0 | for experienced orienteers |
At Regional Events and above, the courses have pictorial control descriptions rather than written control descriptions. You may often find them used at Local Events too.
