Congratulations to Alice and Tom Fellbaum who have been selected to run in the World Schools event in Madrid next Spring. Qualification consisted of a special qualification race on Saturday 16th November, followed by a race in school year classes at the British Schools Championships on the Sunday.
The event in Madrid next year will see teams from all over the World.
Full details are on the BSOA website.
We fielded a small team at this years qualifying event at Torver, depleted mainly due to a clash of dates with an Interland selection race in the New Forest (well done to all the juniors who went there - some really good results).
The weather was excellent for the time of year, blue skies and little wind, most ran in short sleeved tops. The courses were well planned and the terrain was challenging with quite a lot of complex detail.
Romane Salathe and Matthew Fellbaum had good runs on the orange. The rest of the team ran well on yellow, Rosie Ogden, Jason and Hector Salathe, James and Tom McCann.
Many thanks to all the runners and accompanying parents.
DEE and WCOC qualified for the final in Kings Lynn on December 6th, not an easy journey. DEE in particular have a good chance of winning overall as they have strength in all ages, and it would be great if they did win as this would mean all the junior trophies, JIRCS, Peter Palmer and Yvette Baker reside in the North West.
The target for next year is to retain the Peter Palmer Trophy and be in the final for the Yvette Baker.

Congratulations to Tom Fellbaum on his excellent run for Team GB in the M16 relay at the European Youth Orienteering Championships in Switzerland last weekend.
Tom, Duncan Birtwistle and Jonathan Crickmore produced a great team effort finishing in 5th and a place on the podium!
Full report and photos on the British Orienteering website.
Congratulations to Tom Fellbaum who has been selected for the team to the European Youth Orienteering Championships (EYOC) this October.
Congratulations to Tom Fellbaum (M16) and Alice Fellbaum (W15) who have again been selected for the Start Squad for 2008/9.
In 2007 we were 7th, on Sunday we went several better and came 1st, winning the Peter Palmer Trophy.
The competition was held in Middleton Park near Leeds and included the traditional Peter Palmer elements of a night with very little sleep, early morning start (meaning first leg runners off at 5 am) and less than perfect weather (torrential rain over night luckily held off for the race itself). We entered 2 teams.
Our winning team was, in running order;
Tom Fellbaum
Roger Bryant
Alice Fellbaum
Alex McCann
Rebecca Humphreys, Catriona Paton, Alana Birtwistle
Elliot Malkin
We were in the top 4 from the end of the first leg and always in contention for the overall lead, gaining it after some legs (this was sometimes difficult to follow exactly).
Elliot set off in third, just over a minute down on Sarum and close to EBOR. He then had 6.4 km and three visits to a spectator control. On the first and second visits he was still third and on the third visit was second but still a minute down on the leader SARUM. Another loop in the woods and a final push up the hill saw him emerge at the final control around 20m ahead, which was maintained until the finish. About 30 seconds later Elliot came out of download with confirmation he had not mispunched.
A total distance of over a half marathon and a margin of 8 seconds.
EBOR second and SARUM third.
Well done to ALL runners on BOTH teams, you all did really well. Thanks also to Vicky for coming along as a helper and provider of insight into how the courses might be planned - invaluable. We both learnt things we can use next year to defend the trophy.
Full details of the results can be found on the AIRE website.

Congratulations to Elliot Malkin (M18) who was voted the most improved junior in the North West Junior Squad during 2007.
And to Thomas Fellbaum (M16) who has been selected for the Senior Boys team for the World Schools Orienteering Event in Edinburgh in April 2008.
Our juniors very narrowly missed qualifying for the final last weekend at the Borderliners event at Faulds Brow near Caldbeck. A team of 12 took part and we were represented in nearly all classes. The ground was open and runnable, leading to some fast times by all runners, the weather was also ideal, not too hot or cold and dry.
WCOC had a team of 25 and won the round, LOC came second with 17 runners and 873 points, we, with our smaller team were a creditable 3rd with 870 points.
Well done to all who ran and thanks to the parents who acted as transport.
Full results can be found on the BL website.
Several MDOC members came away from the 2 day event in the Yorkshire Dales with top 3 placings in the Dales Trophy which was the decided on the combined time from both days;
W40 Heather Fellbaum 3rd
W45 Vicky Thornton 1st
W70 Sue Birkinshaw 1st
M10 Tom McCann 1st and Matthew Fellbaum 3rd
M14 Alex McCann 3rd
M75 Frank Rose 2nd
Day 1 also decided who became the Northern Champions, open to members of Northern clubs only. This year we have 2 champions, Rae Lomas W65 and Tom McCann M10.
Full results can be found on the AIRE website.
We again entered two teams in the Peter Palmer Relays which were held at Yardley Army camp near Northampton early on Sunday morning. The first 2 legs of this 6 leg relay were held in the dark/early morning light. Sunday morning was quite clear and starry when the early runners Liz and I got up at 4 am, but by the start of the race mist had descended and added to the atmosphere. The mass start involved a charge across a field into the forest, followed by 20 minutes waiting for the runners to pass the spectator control. Tom Fellbaum emerged from the mist in joint first at the spectator control.
All our runners managed to complete their legs without the dreaded disqualification that seems to be very common at this event (14 teams suffered this fate).
In the main Peter Palmer event we finished 7th and 19th out of 20 finishers (behind these were 14 DSQ). In the Joan George handicap event (for teams with a combined orienteering age of less than 90) we finished a strong 3rd out of 17. Full results can be found on the BAOC website.
Both our teams had runners of various ages and levels of experience and ALL deserve congratulations on their performances.
Dave McCann and Liz Britton
Congratulations to Tom Fellbaum (M15) and Alice Fellbaum (W14) who have been selected for the Start Squad for 2008.

Congratulations to Sophie Wood who has been selected to join the GB team for the MTBO World Championships, which are being held in Nove Mesto in the Czech Republic from the 6-11th August.
Sophie was the winner of the Veteran Womens title in the Long Distance race at this year's British MTBO Championships, which took place on Beaudesert and Rawnsley Hills at the end of June.
The team will compete in 5 races - a Sprint, Middle, Long Qualifier, Long Final and Relay - over the 6 days. You can follow the action at the event website.
Andrew Gregory reports ...
Many thanks to everyone who ran in the Footpath Relay, and to all those who helped transport wet and muddy runners. Special thanks to Malcolm Fowler and Andrew Tongue who volunteered to run two legs. Everyone turned up, and as far as I know no-one was left waiting hours in the rain for a lift.
A brilliant team effort - and very impressive results considering the number of juniors, seniors and female runners in our team. Teams only need to have 20 handicap points, and our two teams had 36 and 43 points respectively.
The full results are given on www.dvo.org.uk, but I have summarised the overall results and our individual results here. Note that legs 6 and 20 had an intermediate control, and are treated as two legs in the DVO results. I have added the times together.
Andrew

Kim Creasey writes ...
May I thank all of Phil's friends for their very generous donations to the Woodland Trust. As a result of the money given, an acre of woodland has been dedicated to Phil's memory at Waulkmill Wood in Bollington and a plaque has been erected with a short dedication inside the woodland. If anyone would like to visit the wood, they can contact me for directions or a grid reference.
On May 11th at 8pm at Bollington Arts Centre, Phil's brother Malc will give a short tribute to Phil and then give an illustrated talk entitled "Travels without a Yak". If anyone would like tickets they are available from me on 01625 573945. (Note: the phone number on the poster is wrong.)
On a personal note, thank you to everyone who has sent messages and especially photos of Phil. They are much appreciated.
With best wishes, Kim Creasey
The 2006 British Schools Orienteering Championships were held on 19th November at Hawkbatch, Bewdley, Worcs.

In the Whole School competition, St Richard's came 4th in the Primary category, with King's 7th and Fallibroome 12th in the Large Secondary category.
Full results can be found on the BSOA website.
Congratulations to Elliot Malkin (M16) for being the joint winner of the Reebok Golden Shoe Run-In Split Competition, at the CompassSport Cup Final, tieing with Andy Hodgson (M21) from SLOW.
Nick Barrable reports ... "The run in was about 100metres, slightly downhill near the end with firm, dry
going on gravel path and grass. However, competitors had to negotiate a kissing
gate or jump a partially dismantled fence beside the gate midway down it.
In the end it was a tie with two runners on 21 seconds. Maybe in future, there
will be a sprint-off!"
Well done, Elliot!

The 2006 British Schools Score Championships were held on 7th October in Park Wood near High Wycombe. The weather was sunny all day which helped prevent the finish field turning into a mud bath. 30 controls were placed in the wood, of difficulty varying from white to light green. This meant there was a variety of running speeds and on the harder controls potential for lost time.
Congratulations to Alex McCann from MDOC, who finished 2nd in the Year 7 Boys category, with 220 points, behind Aidan Smith of SYO who scored 260.
St Richard's entered 4 teams and although not repeating last year's wins they achieved 2nd and 6th in the Primary Boys team competition and 3rd and 8th in the Primary Girls, receiving nicely framed maps of the area.
Full results can be found on the BSOA website.
Manchester and District Orienteering Club have recently held two introductory events for running clubs. Whilst it is too early to say whether they will attract new permanent members to the sport, the 2 events were very well received and left a positive impression of the sport.
It was felt important for these events to create both a race atmosphere and to maximise the speed at which the runners were able to compete. This was done specifically because of the fitness of the target market and to give the impression of the sport as one of a navigational race rather than a walking technical search. It was also important to avoid anyone becoming hopelessly lost and therefore put off. In order to achieve this aim the event was based upon a relay format with all of the runners starting at the same time.
The key points were as follows:
It is proposed to repeat the events in the spring as a feed in to the Club's summer evening series.
