MDOC Street Score Event |
Thank you all 26 for attending. Catherine helped with the surveying and Liz did most of the arithmetic - but all the mistakes were mine. Controls 1, 2, and 3 were nearer the junctions than marked. 21 was further south than marked.
49 and 50 were correct - but not all of you pushed far enough down the respective roads (and 50 had become more obscured by tree since the planning). 12 - I failed to find it - but many of you did. 44 was obvious if approached from the north -but could be missed from the south (it was nailed to a telegraph pole). 52 seemed unequivocal at the planning stage - but looked ambiguous this morning whilst driving past (Unless the rain has produced an extra crop of lamp posts in the last week)
We tried to keep you off the main roads - but valuable tens of seconds were lost in crossing some of them.
For interest, the matrix below shows how many runners visited each control.

Number 14 was missed by everyone - Barbara thought about it but was misled by
the splodge on the map.
Few made it to the north west corner (so we can use that again in Wilmslow North).
It shows that orienteers get everywhere.
Our handicapping gave 3 extra points to the ladies. Over 45s and under 18s gained 2 points. Over 60s and under 14s gained 3 points (in retrospect should perhaps have been 4). Bikers had 5 points deducted - irrespective of age and sex. Others (scooters, roller skates) did not turn up so we did not have to devise a scheme for them.
We erred in trying to do the scoring ourselves. Self assessment is better for several reasons and would have produced quicker results. Marking was not rigorous - and we gave contestants the benefit of the doubt - that they had been there even if they couldn’t find the control. Not IOF - but this is supposed to be a fun way of training while we are locked out of forests. Penalty points were applied only for whole minutes late, so, strictly it was a 61 minute score event, but we thought we would tell you at the end.

I ran my own course in the afternoon. I had the advantage of knowing the map and having thought about the control sites for two or three weeks. I had a strategy (which lasted about 20 minutes) and was then forced to make the route up (and constantly modify it) as I ran.
We don’t guarantee 99.99% accuracy of the results - but I hope I have not grossly misrepresented anyone’s efforts.
