Pre Event Info

The Northern Championships weekend comprises a middle race on the limestone of Knipe Scar near Penrith on Saturday 17th and the Northern Championship courses on Angle Tarn Pikes on Sunday 18th.

UKOL for colour coded courses on Saturday and the Championship courses on the Sunday.

Angle Tarn Pikes rises to 567m and on a clear day has excellent views to the Helvellyn ridge to the W and the High Street range in the E. The terrain is runnable in most places, with areas of complex contours and rock detail which the planner will make good use of.

Because of its elevation, you should be prepared for a "full on" mountain day, particularly if the weather is poor. Please dress appropriately. Hooded waterproofs may be made compulsory.

Directions / Parking

  • Patterdale is served by the A592 running through the valley from Pooley Bridge to the Kirkstone Pass. Patterdale is on the A592 at the head of Ullswater.

The access to parking at Side Farm will be signed off the A592 and takes you across the valley in a roughly NE direction, on a good firm track.

If you plan to drive anything other than a car to the event, please indicate this via the entry system.

Registration & Start Times

Start times will be from 1030 until 1330, the entry system will allow you to select from one of 5 preferred start blocks. In line with rules for area championships starts will be timed, not punching. This means that it is your responsibility to get to the start in time for your allocated start time. If you are late for your start you will be given the next available start on your course but you will be deemed to have started at your allocated time.

Entrants on colour coded courses will be allocated an open start time.

Keep in mind that the start is remote from assembly, on a good path at a distance of approx. 1.8 km, with a climb of approx. 300 m. We suggest allowing 40-45 minutes from leaving assembly to get to the start. This suggestion is a guide, only you know how fast you can or want to walk/run to your start.

The entry system will allow you and your partner to indicate if you want split starts. With the distance to the start we urge that BOTH partners take split starts. You will both then be allocated open starts.

Only the longest course for each age class is a Northern Championship course, (for M/W18/20/21 this is the E course, for M/W16 and younger this is the A course, for all other classes it is the L course). The longest course in each age class is part of the UKOL.  Age class courses will be available for pre-entry only.

Colour coded courses from White to Light Green are offered. These will be open to pre-entry and entry on the day, subject to map availability.

It is intended to provide a string course, this will NOT be on the fell, it will be closer to assembly.

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
