Marker's Comments

Jane apologises for the four controls where the question wasn't exactly as intended (21, 38, 57, 62) and a couple of controls where the dot wasn't placed accurately enough (35,39). Unfortunately, these errors crept in during the last stages of planning and Christmas festivities got in the way of the usual levels of preparation and checking. Also, the locked looking gate that caused confusion (46) - this had been wide open every time it had been visited during planning even mid evening on New Year's Eve! All attempts at these controls have now been credited, though we can't compensate for time lost hunting around.

On the other hand, people are still losing points by writing down wrong answers even where the dot and question are perfectly aligned ... Stephen Martin 10, Graham Nilsen 11, Dave Riley 13, Julian Brown 22, Amy + Sarah and Pete Lomas 31, John Williams and Rebecca Glen 49, Steve + Andrew and Pete Lomas 52.

Because mistakes do happen, if you have navigated accurately to the dot, had a look around and still can't answer the question - rather than waste further time, write something down that proves you were there and move on.

Planner's notes

There was much discussion about whether or not to span the A6 with the mapped area for the event. Obviously it is a busy road, but by including the area east of the A6 I was able to include new areas, use a better spread of controls and provide more variation in route choice. It appeared successful on the evening, with those that crossed taking heed of the warnings to allow time to cross safely. 75 minute runners were also at risk of time penalties if you didn't cross the A6, as it was a long way to the western edge of the map. Thank you to everybody for their feedback.

Additional information from the organiser/planner:
The Fiveways www.joseph-holt.com/pubs/view/the-fiveways is located on the edge of Hazel Grove as you head on the A523 to Poynton and Macclesfield. The pub has a decent sized car park and a wide range of food is available to order from the bar on the evening.
But please note:
- the parking behind the shop must not be used
- last orders for food are at 9pm
- dirty shoes must be removed at the door after running (there is a carpeted area inside).

To add a twist to previous events in the area, we have mapped some new bits of Hazel Grove. Strategy will be the key to a successful run, as the A6 runs through the mapped area together with several other well used roads that may be busy with traffic in early evening. Can you gather enough points without crossing these roads or can you plan ahead and allow time for crossing there and back?

Safety is always important. There are many traffic light controlled pedestrian crossings in the area and critical points will be mapped to help you, but you will need to allow time to make the crossing safely. There are also linking sections through residential areas which will challenge your route choice skills. High visibility clothing must be worn. A torch is strongly recommended - connecting routes aren't always lit and neither is Torkington Park.
