Event Report

Sorry we completely forgot about stapling maps to clue sheets, so if you usually have them stapled, apologies.

Sorry for any confusion about values - the bit on the clue sheet about 10xvalue of first digit doesn't work for 100+, and we hadn't spotted it !  But I think very few people realised there might be a problem.

It appears that some people had downloaded a previous Hawk Green event rather than the intended 2024 Marple event, and unsurprisingly it didn't work too well.  Do we need to clear away any old events in the same vicinity as new ones somehow ?

The majority of people seemed to enjoy the abundance of controls, but some found it challenging in unusual ways - too many choices so hard to strategise, difficulty keeping map contact...    All feedback very welcome - to Grahame, please!

And congratulations to Mark Burley, who ran 17k plus over 200m of climb so effectively over 19k. Seems like a very long way !

Pre Event Info

Score event with 40 minute, 60 minute or 75 minute time limit. Under 16s MUST be accompanied by an adult. 16 and 17 year olds can compete alone but ONLY with written consent from parent/guardian. Lights essential (+ back-up). High-visibility clothing compulsory.

Venue: Hawk Green Cricket Club, 20 Upper Hibbert Ln, Marple, Stockport SK6 7HQ

Register 6.00 to 7.00pm. Starts 6.30 to 7.30pm. Fee £4/£2.

The event will be a MapRun event, enabling use of the MapRun app on your phone or the MapRunG app on to your watch.

If you are new to the system, please read the instructions on our website

and download the MapRun apps to your phone or watch.  The event files will be available a few days before the event. You are strongly advised to download everything you need before you arrive at the event.

As usual at our NSL Maprun events, a traditional paper-based backup will be available for those who request it.

Start and Finish will be timed using SI as usual.

Parking Arrangements

Parking at the cricket club is very limited, and on-street parking close by is difficult – unless you are really early, please park on-street along Barnsfold Road (SK6 7JF), using the alley to get to the club, or in the Goyt Mill car park off Sunwell Terrace (SK6 7JB) which is 200m North of the club, – see map:

Food

Food will be provided by CheshireFood – choice of butter chicken curry, steak chilli, 3-bean veggie chilli, all served with rice, at £7.50. Please send your food orders to by midnight Sunday Jan 28th to guarantee you’ll get a meal.

The event

As this is the 100th MDOC NSL event, it will be a little bit special – in particular, it features 100 controls (values 30-120), with penalties at 1pt per second. Necessarily, circles are quite small, and the clue sheet especially compact – so bring good specs and sharp pencils ! Several controls are under tree cover so placement and signals may be unreliable – we strongly recommend you take your clue sheet and are ready to write answers if you need to, though all controls have been tested a number of times. If you’re not picking up a control every 200m you’re doing it wrong!

The map is 1:10250, and slopes upwards from Marple Hall in the NW corner to Marple Ridge in the SE corner. Mostly slopes are gentle, but the area between the canal and Marple Ridge can be pretty steep. Longer-distance folks will have to cross the busy A626 – at both likely crossing places there are central islands to enable safe crossing. It will likely take you longer to get back than it did to get down!

Registration

To enter the event, everyone should pre-enter using the MDOC Registration System  https://mdocentry.org.uk (when available). Select your course, then choose a start block. If you do not have your own SI card (dibber), a hire dibber will be allocated to you. This process will guarantee that a map is available for you on the night.

If you wish to run as a pair, you both need to pre-enter the event.

Entries will close at midnight on Tuesday 30th January (but note the earlier date for food orders - see above).

We would prefer to avoid entry on the day (EOD) but a limited number of maps may be available. Please do NOT rely on it.

On the night registration will be based in the pub. You will need to pick up your personalised clue sheet and a dibber (if requested) and pay for your entry. Our preferred system of payment is by contactless card - using the Zettle system. Cash payments will be possible, but not encouraged.

Please note that all runners will receive a map, and will be charged for it (£4 senior, £2 junior);  additional maps (for people running in pairs) will be charged at £2.

There is now a £1 reduction for MDOC members (so £3 seniors, £1 juniors).

Remember

  • you don't have to use MapRun - you can just fill in the answers on your cluesheet,
  • in the (unlikely ?) event of a missing "beep" at a control, MapRunners MUST record a written response on their clue sheet.
  • you get points if you get a beep or if you write the answer down. Simples.
  • photos of typical control sites can be seen on the Typical NSL Controls webpage,
  • final details - including a copy of the Safety Notice, and the safety map will be emailed to all pre-entries after entries have closed - they will not be available at registration.
