Manchester and District Orienteering Club Alderley Edge Evening Event
|
Alderley Edge is a beautiful woodland with a wealth of detailed and interesting features, making the planner's job a very enjoyable one. 'The Edge' itself, however, running along the northern side of the area, is exceptionally steep, and in places rises more than 50m from bottom to top. Also, at this time of the year (when the event must be held due to land restrictions), the bracken, which colonises many of the slopes, is at its worst.
The flatter upper part of the area is quite suitable for White and Yellow courses, albeit that in such a heavily used woodland there are always many new minor paths making it sometimes difficult to decide which is the path on the map. I hope everyone who tackled these courses, especially those new to the sport, enjoyed them and will want to have another go.
The Orange and Red courses were perhaps aimed too much at those with experience of courses at this level, rather than those trying them for the first time. However, whilst tempting the competitor to cut directly across the forest, there were feasible path routes on all legs, with good attack points. The courses probably did have too much climb, so I apologise to those of you who found them too physically tough !
The Light Green course was planned to be significantly more technical than Orange. The guidelines for this state that anything except navigation through detailed contour features is acceptable. I think that most competitors on this course found the technical level about right, although again, the severity of the slope made the course very physically challenging, especially for older competitors.
The Blue course is meant to be the hardest physically and navigationally, and most people who ran this expected it to be so. I thank you for the many favourable comments received !
It's the people on the Green course who deserve the biggest apology. We committed the ultimate travesty of siting control no. 13 incorrectly, as several of you pointed out, in a re-entrant closer to the road than the one circled. Those of you with courses complete apart from that control have been reinstated. To anyone who wasted time there, many apologies - I've learnt a lesson about taping control sites in advance. Apart from that the Green course was, I now realise, much too physically tough, and to those who called me a sadist afterwards - criticism accepted. You all deserve a medal !
Finally, A really big THANK YOU !!! to those wonderful Trojans, who, despite surviving (just) the rigours of my courses, ventured forth, in the rain, to bring in controls - especially those who went down that hill just one more time, struggling back up with armfuls of awkward aluminium stakes ! Thanks to Mike Butcher, Phil Colville, Paul Jarvis, Steve Bingham, Dave Walker, Andy Smith, Martin Green (who was press-ganged on the day), and all the Greenwood family, especially 5-year-old George ! I couldn't have done it without you guys !.
