Manchester and District Orienteering Club
Wythenshawe Park Saturday Challenge
Getting up to a blood-red sky didn't bode well for this Saturday's event, but the weather did in fact hold. Only the second half of the starters suffered due to a smattering of rain and those helping at the start/finish area managed to keep reasonably warm.
Wythenshawe Park has been used several times by the club in the past and has a reputation for muddy conditions and unfortunate loss of equipment. Thankfully, neither of these issues gave the competitors any problems this time (except, I have to mention Jim Nightingale who bravely continued after falling full length in a swamp!).
The controls were planned by Dave McCann and Alex, who did a fine job and managed to provide a spread across the whole park, stretching the legs of the experienced orienteers. Thanks should also go very sincerely to Julie Brook for all the technical stuff with computers and Chris Kirkham and Margaret Gregory for explaining things so well to any novices they could grab in the start area.
The event could not have taken place without the help of Ian and Kevin Watson, the McCanns, Chris Owen and Edouard Salathé who arrived very early to set out the controls. Edouard of course pulled out all the stops to record the fastest time of the day.
Special mention should go to all the novice orienteers who used this event as their first ever outing: Abbas and friend, our competitor newly arrived from Finland and all the individuals and families who did their best in quite testing conditions. Also to the first lady finisher who recorded a super fast time but missed the final control on the run-in!
The equipment (superbly kept and maintained by Jim and Pete) is coming out again 22nd November at Sale Water Park. We hope to see you there!
