- White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
- Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
- Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
- Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
- Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
- Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.

Terrain Description
Terrain & mapping notes: Lyme is a mixture of rough grass parkland and high moorland, which is tussocky in parts, with rock detail from former quarry workings. The park also has several areas of mixed woodland with patches of rhododendron and steep stream valleys. The shortest courses will stay on the grassy promontory known as Cage Hill but competitors on the longest courses should also expect to cross moorland, woods and valleys
Map: Scale: Courses White, Yellow & Orange: 1:5000. Other courses: 1:10000.
Drainage work has taken place on the open moorland around several of the bigger streams. Consequently, there are temporary access tracks in places which have not been mapped. On Cage Hill there are numerous saplings with small fences around them. These are not mapped. Big trees and dead trees are mapped. Some trees in Lantern Wood are being felled, so there is a lot of wood on the ground. Courses that go in the wood have been planned to avoid the worst of the forestry work.
Crossing points: Walls must only be crossed at marked crossing points. Fences without the purple line on them may be crossed but may not gain you much. Fences with a purple line on them must not be crossed.
Timing system: SportIdent (SI). Competitors without an SI ‘dibber’ to record their course can borrow one at Registration. Controls will be SIAC enabled for competitors with their own contactless SI cards. All competitors must punch the Start and Finish controls.
Facilities
Toilets / Café: At the Timber Yard, about 250m from the main car park.
