Event Report

Thanks to everyone who came along to Dunham last night - it's even nicer when its sunny!

The pub staff seemed very happy to have had us there.

The following controls raised some issues:

11  Millstones on SW side of Old Mill. My answer was 3, but there were several answers of 2 which I have therefore accepted (in case the clue was ambiguous).

22  Wooden bridge with stiles: how many diagonals? Control circle on wrong brook? Oops, sorry. Nevertheless, I've only accepted '3', not 2, 4 or 9.

23  Supports at bridge over Bollin. Planner error: ambiguous clue (sorry). My answer was 11, but I've also accepted 12, and 1 - which is the number of supports below the bridge.

31  Number of cables connected to neighbouring poles. There were several answers which matched my answer of 9, but there were also several different offerings which I've not accepted. I'm sorry if the clue wasn't clear enough.

35  The owl had left its perch! (Last reported siting:  in the nearby phone box!) I've accepted any answer.

39  S-most cottage.  West View is the right answer. I've not allowed Sunset View (next door).

Well done to those whose eyesight was good enough to read the hexagonal bolts or the name on the padlock, and those whose patience enabled them to count the 44 wooden planks accurately!

No-one seems to have visited control 43 (I don't blame you), and only 2 visited the canal kerbstone at control 10 (shame, it's a lovely spot).

Planning lessons learned:

- if you've any doubts at all about how a clue will be interpreted, think again - or maybe drop the control site and find another one.

- there were too few controls near the pub, so the 60-minute walkers didn't have enough to go at. Sorry

Pre Event Info

Venue: Axe & Cleaver, School Lane, Dunham Massey, Altrincham, WA14 4SE

A brand new venue for this one! Never used before and expertly planned by a meticulous planner.

Rural score event using public rights of way on an enlarged OS map extract.
60 or 90 minute score event. You can choose which time you run for after starting - very handy if you are miles away when 60 minutes expires.

Bring a pen/pencil and a watch.

Each control on the map will be marked by a numbered circle. On the clue sheet there will be a clue asking a question about an object at the centre of the circle. The answer should be written on the clue sheet next to the question. We try to keep the clues as unambiguous as possible. A typical clue will not be;

What is the blind animal in the garden of Cragside Cottage? Answer; No Idea. - get it?

A typical clue will be. "What is the name of the footpath on the metal sign at the junction?"

A great network of paths around Dunham Massey will give you the chance to explore places you've never been before, see some odd structures and at the same time have a good run in open fields and well kept paths (well mostly well kept but stuff does grow fast at this time of year).

For anyone who came to High Lane recently they may be relieved that the hills are almost non existent.

The pub has kindly offered a 25% discount off food so please take advantage of this.
