Event Report

Thanks to everyone for coming on a rather wet night - and if you didn't get wet from the rain, you had an excellent chance of being drenched from un-mown grass.

Sorry for the frisky cattle near control 37 - they weren't there 2 weeks ago.  I know that some of you were delayed because of the need to take evasive action so David, Alan and Hazel have fewer time penalties as compensation. There may be other people who were similarly affected in which case please let me know.

Apologies to Tim Mallon who was taken away in a van from the vicinity of control 23 by a security man claiming to be from the MoD. This is such an unlikely tale it just has to be true. Sadly this didn't drop Tim any nearer other controls.

Thanks to (Long) John Britton and Richard Evans for marking clue-sheets and running the Finish

Pre Event Info

Venue: The Crown, Crown Lane, Lower Peover, Knutsford, WA16 9QB

Rural score event using public rights of way on an enlarged OS map extract.
60 or 90 minute score event.
Bring a pen/pencil and your watch.

Each control on the map will be marked by a numbered circle. On the clue sheet there will be a clue asking a question about an object at the centre of the circle. The answer should be written on the clue sheet next to the question. We try to keep the clues as unambiguous as possible. A typical clue will be;

Date on the BENCH commemorating Eileen Dover.

Food

Because of the likely 'peakiness' of our meal requests, the landlady has requested that we order from the basket snacks menu which offers: chicken (breast cut into cubes), sausages (3), scampi, fish, or nuggets all with chips for £7.95. You can order at the bar before your run, or after your run if you prefer, in which case it may take a little longer to be served but, we’ve been assured, not very long.

You can wash your food down with a choice of 3 real ales and/or an assortment of other beverages.

Location

Nearest town: Lower Peover

It has about 40 parking spaces - please park tidily within the (faintly) marked spaces.

Registration & Start Times

Terrain Description

OS Map extract with controls marked on it. Separate clue sheet to write your answers on.

The scale of the map is approximately 1:17,000, and there are 47 controls offering various route options for the 60-minute walkers and rather more for the faster runners, particularly those who opt for 90 minutes.

The only routes which competitors are allowed to use are ‘yellow’ or ‘brown’ roads and ‘green’ footpaths (i.e. rights of way). Fences (black lines), parish boundaries (rows of black dots), unitary authority boundaries (longer black dashes) and the lines of overhead pylons (shorter black dashes) do not indicate viable routes.

About two thirds of the mapped area lies west of the M6 for which there are 3 possible crossing points (bridges). The village of Lach Dennis is in the SW of the map and the NW boundary is the Manchester-Chester railway line.

This area is quite flat and features several small ponds. Some of the area is used for dairy farming (please don’t upset the cattle!) and some for cereal crops. But there are also several private roads (shown in white on the map and out of bounds to competitors) which serve the underlying brine fields, some of which are now used for gas storage. This has led to a variety of unusual man-made features above ground. Some of the small hut structures are mapped, some not.

Unfortunately, north-west of Hulme Hall, building works relating to the construction of additional private roads has brought about the suspension of part of a right of way. Please observe this route closure, which is marked by purple crosses on the map.  [The nettles are particularly fierce here, so it’s best avoided!]

East of the M6 lies the parish of Lower Peover which features a somewhat denser network of footpaths (rights of way), and quiet country roads in gently contoured countryside. If you visit Lower Peover itself, you will need to navigate very carefully around the church and adjacent pub, The Bells of Peover. To the north-west of the Crown, you may recognise some features relating to the abandoned Peover golf course.
