Pre Event Info

This is our annual new year charity event. The format is a Scatter course where each course map contains a selection of the control points on the ground. There will be a single start location and a single finish location. From a massed start, competitors must visit all controls on their map in any order but will also be able to miss out some controls of their own choice. How many you miss out depends on your age class. (See the table below)

Our nominated charity this year is "The Blythe House Hospice"

  • To guarantee a map, pre-enter through Racesignup.co.uk before 23.59 on January 16th. EOD while maps available. 
  • An entry fee will be charged to cover the unavoidable BOF and NWOA levies. MDOC will absorb all other costs.
  • Fees are Senior BOF member £2,  Senior non-BOF member £3, All juniors 70p.
  • No other payment is required but donations to this year’s charity will be welcomed, with Gift Aid available.
  • National Trust members have free entry to the park but should present their NT membership card at the entry kiosk. In addition, Lyme National Trust have generously waived their £7 entry fee for non-National Trust members.attending this event.
  • The donations will be taken on the day with payment by card or in cash. Phone coverage is 'flakey' so be prepared to use cash for both donations and raffle.

Raffle

There will be a raffle with prizes donated by club members. Takings will be donated to the charity.

The entrance to Lyme is on the A6 just west of Disley Village SK12 2NR

The main carpark at Lyme is about one mile from the entrance gate. Note: there is a Park Run every Saturday at Lyme. If people could lift share it would help to ease pressure on the car park and would be greatly appreciated.

Registration & Start Times

Registration   

In the car park.  Register between 10.15 and 11.10.

Collect your map and visit the Donations tent.  Collect a dibber if necessary.  Buy your Raffle tickets. Clear and check boxes are adjacent

The start location will be 400m, 20m climb, allow at least 10 minutes from Registration. There will be two massed starts. The first will be for all except the Novice course and will take place at 11:30 sharp.
The massed start for the Novice course will be in the same location at 11:35.

The Finish is 60 m from download.
 

Course Information

The event has 4 competitive courses, Long, Medium, Short and Very Short. All maps are A3.

You can enter whichever course you want, but to be competitive you should choose the correct one for your age class (or a longer one).  You visit all the controls on the map in any order, apart from the ones that you choose to miss out according to age class. See table below.

All courses will close at 13:15. The winner will be the competitor who visits at least the number of allowed controls less the quantity that can be missed out for his/her age class, in the shortest time.

The Novice course is a conventional line course, suitable for families and young juniors (slightly above Yellow standard). It has 8 controls on an A4 map at a scale of 1:7,500.

Controls will be enabled for SIACs, including the Finish

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

Toilets and cafe are in the Timber Yard, 250m from the car park.

Prizes

Prizegiving and Raffle draw will take place as soon as possible after 12.45.

There will be prizes for leading Men & Women on each course.

Novice course offers a token gift to all finishers.

Dogs allowed?

Dogs are allowed in the Park, under close control and on leads at all times. 

No dogs are  allowed on the competitive courses.

Cancellation

If the Met Office predict a wind speed of 55mph or higher (for Lyme Hall), the park will be closed and hence the event cancelled.

If this is necessary there will be an anouncement on the website and entry fees will be donated to the event charity.

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.
