Third of 4 early evening Spunch events in Manchester City Centre on Tuesday evenings in April and May. All from trendy city bars / pubs within 10-15 mins walk from Piccadilly Station.

Results

Pre Event Info

You will use a detailed A3 waterproof map to navigate your way as fast as you wish from one Spunchpoint to another.  Each Spunchpoint will be at a well-defined feature on your map - a path junction, a significant tree or similar. 

At each Spunchpoint you will receive GPS verification that you are in the right place on your Smartphone/Garmin/AppleWatch. “Beep Beep!”

Rolling start - anytime between 1830 & 1930.  Check in on the day from 1800.

Course Information

Same area as used for SpunchMCR2 but with different courses and controls.

Choice of 60 min (or 90 min - choose on the day) Score Course or measured 10k (optimum route) Line Course.

1.  Spunchbag 60 or 90 - A 60/90 minute time-limited "score" course typically with 40-50 Spunchpoints which can be visited in any order.

  • Visit (or “bag”) as many Spunchpoints as you can within your chosen time limit.  Get back on time to avoid penalty points!
  • Especially good for Spunch-newbies
  • Good for those who prefer a shorter (time-limited) outing visiting more points, but also good for those who want to max-out (15k and 50 Spunchpoints may be doable!)
  • For this course the map with pre-marked Spunchpoints is available to participants BEFORE the start - allowing some time for pre-planning

2.  SpunchLine 10 - A measured 10k line course typically with 30ish Spunchpoints that must be visited in strict numerical order.

  • Not for the faint-hearted!  Most suitable for those with previous MapSport experience (as missing one or more controls means no result)
  • A more competitive race - the winner having the fastest time.  Estimated winning time around 45mins
  • In this case the map with pre-marked course is only revealed on the start line as the clock starts ticking! 

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.
