Organisers' Comments

As a veteran organiser of only 3 local summer evening events the MDOC committee in their wisdom decided that I was now qualified and ready to take on the role of day organiser for the 2006 Twin Peak! With the support of Sue Birkinshaw and other experienced club members I accepted knowing that I could rely on their support and guidance.

Anyway the event is now almost over, the Goyt Valley has returned back to an area of peace and tranquillity with little evidence remaining (apart from a few elephant tracks) that over 800 competitors had been competing over the weekend.

My thanks go out to all the 70 odd MDOC members who helped make this event a success and who willingly stepped in to volunteer taking on a whole variety of roles and tasks and often taking on other activities as required without question. Your support and help I'm sure is most appreciated by all the competitors.

Of course an event of this scale rarely passes off without any hitches, however when they did arise they were generally resolved without fuss and hopefully without causing you, the competitor, too much inconvenience. We continue to learn from these events and therefore any comments positive or negative will be well received.

Thank you for parking as instructed. The lack of parking in the valley did mean that many of you were required to park some distance from assembly and starts. I hope this didn't inconvenience you too much and hopefully with the flexible start procedure the stress of having to get to the start at a fixed time was reduced.

Finally I would especially like to thank the planners and the controllers for each day. I hope you enjoyed the challenge they presented to you.

We hope to see you all at the next Twin Peak 2007.

Day 1 Controller's Comments

It was easy working with Dan and Karen, even with me being out of the country for the first two weeks of October. Everything was agreed before the end of September. The only comments of any note I made were about the map detail not their courses. Despite the green tinge to the map the courses produced route choices and in most cases the best route was not far away from the straight line. Having looked at the results the course lengths were almost perfect.

There were times during the checking when I found the forest delightful. I hope it looked that way during the competition.

Day 2 Planners' Comments

It was never going to be possible to produce particularly technically challenging courses on this part of Errwood, so we tried to keep you interested with some route choice legs. Judging by some of your comments at the finish, we think we got a tick in that box.

Physically it was always going to be tough (some described it as "brutal") due to the mix of vegetation underfoot and the climb, but looking at the results, winning times look sensible, the tail-enders were not out for too long, and there were very few DNFs. (Thanks to our Comtroller Brian Shaw for advising us to review the climb on one or two courses!).

We were working with a number of constraints. Originally we had hoped to take more courses further South, but the re-construction of an uncrossable wall, and the even-more-physical nature of the terrain further South caused us to rethink. We also considered having the start higher in order to reduce climb on some of the courses - but this caused complications with the road crossings, and the junior courses. In the end we were happy that the pleasant and convenient "lakeside" start & finish locations allowed us to plan reasonable courses for all, without too many compromises.

We (or more accurately, you) were very lucky with the weather. It rained heavily on Sunday until about 9am when we were out checking controls, and again from about 2.30pm when you had all gone home!

Special thanks to Brian and his assistant Martin Ward, and to everyone else in the MDOC event organisation machine....

Day 2 Controller's Comments

It was a pleasure working with Andy and Vicky and they produced some challenging courses with plenty of route choice. An open area with extensive views naturally has technical limitations but they made the most of the terrain. Their dedication and hard work made my job very easy and I thank them on your behalf. Thanks also to Martin Ward who stepped in to help out when I got shingles.
