Directions / Parking

Please use the Heaton Lane Car park (20p an hour) (Height restriction 2m). You can use the RingGo app to pay No. 15023.

Please do not use the Precinct Car parks as they are in the competition area.

Assembly: 200-300m depending which pedestrian exit is used.

Cross Heaton Lane to George Hotel then walk up West side of main road to Viaduct Park and Assembly.

If you end up in the Redrock Car park, from the pedestrian exit, cross over Port Street and round the corner past Joseph James, and cross the main road to the George Hotel, turn left and Viaduct Park is 200m on the right.

Please don’t cut across Mersey Square.

Camper Vans and High vehicles:  Street Parking only. Chestergate, Mersey Square, Hooper Street are the nearest to Assembly.

Public transport options: 

Either by Train to Stockport Station, 400m to Assembly. Walk down Station road to Macdonald traffic lights, then turn left and Viaduct Park assembly is in 200m. Please do not use the signed path to Viaduct Park halfway down Station Road.

Or by Bus: any route to Stockport Bus station then take lift to Viaduct Park.

There is one Start for all courses

Start times:  10:30 to 12:30         (Allocated start times but punching start)

Start:  700m from Assembly and up to 15m climb.  Allow 15mins.

Finish:  Finish in assembly.

Course closing time: 14:30

Course Information

Standard UK urban league classes.

All courses have a timed out road crossing at some pedestrian lights (1 minute 30secs). Please follow marshals instructions.

Safety: If wet, cobbled streets will be slippy.
The route to the road crossing is downhill on cobbles - take care especially if wet.

Suitability:

  • Juniors under 16 on the day can only enter course 7 or 8
  • Entrants of courses 1, 2 and 3 need to hire an SI Card if their own one does not accept more than 30 punches

    (i.e. Type 5 Card No 1-499,999 and Type 8 Card Nos 2,000,001-2,999,999)

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

Entries on Racesignup where you select the class (or optionally course if running down a class) and you will be asked to select your own start time.

Fees:  Adult £12, Junior £5

Terrain Description

Complex Town centre with many steep alleyways and irregular street pattern, 1970’s estate  plus area to the West including small park and many streets and alleyways.

The Stockport competition area is not Flat.
