NW Assessor Scheme

Feedback from competitors is encouraged, both positive and negative. If you have any comments after the event, please send them to the Place Fell controllers Dan and Karen Parker at as soon as possible. They will prepare a short report which goes to NWOA with the aim of improving the quality of NWOA’s high-level events.

Twin Peak Competition

Times from Day 1 and Day 2 for each course except VS Green will be added together to determine the Twin Peak winners - for VS Green, only Day2 will count.

Unique Twin Peak prizes will be awarded to the winners of M10/W10 to M/W85 (excluding S/B courses) - to qualify you must run the same course each day (except for M80-85 and W75-85 where only Day2 counts).

Safety

Lone runners MUST leave car keys (or something equally unforgettable) at Enquiries and complete a Safety form.

First Aid will be available both at the Finish and at Enquiries.

A whistle must be carried whatever the conditions.

Come prepared for all possible types of weather. Shorts are allowed. Cags may be compulsory - this means a waterproof jacket with a hood. There is a clothing dump very close to the Start and Finish on both days so you can carry food, drink, extra clothes, etc, to the Start and make late decisions on what exactly you need to keep yourself safe all the time you're on the hill - be it fluids or clothes.

There are two safe routes off Place Fell, via the Finish or via the main ridge path which goes South to Boredale Hause, then NW down the track to Side Farm.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LEAVE THE AREA ANY OTHER WAY

Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.

Directions / Parking

Parking will be at Side Farm, Patterdale CA11 0NP, GR NY 398 162, about 12 miles north of Windermere and 12 miles from junction 40 of the M6 at Penrith. £1.50 per day per vehicle. Assembly adjacent to the parking area with all facilities available, including the Side Farm tea-room and campsite.

Registration & Start Times

Start Times: 12.00 to 15.00 (Registration opens at 11.00 for EOD)

The route to the main start/finish area is about 2.2km with 300metres climb, partly up a steep, rough path. Remember to allow enough time to get to the starts, enjoying the superb views over the northern Lake District. You can dump excess clothing/food/etc close to the Start and Finish. 

Course Information

We are offering courses for all BOF Age Classes. The Twin Peak 2015 Flyer lists the competitive courses for each age group, but you are welcome to enter the colour course of your choice.

On Day1, we appreciate that some competitors don't wish to take on the walk to the start, so there will be a "Silver" course which makes the best we can of the Silver Point area - approximately Orange length and TD4.

White, Yellow and Orange courses will also use the Silver Point low-level area beside Ullswater - around 600m from Assembly.

String Course close to Assembly. 

Explanation of colour courses

  • White are very easy with all controls on paths. They are mainly used by 6-10 year olds and family groups.
  • Yellow use simple linear features like paths, walls and streams. They are mainly used by under 12’s and family groups.
  • Orange progress to basic use of the compass and route choice. They are ideal for novice adults or experienced youngsters.
  • Light Green are ideal for improvers as the navigational difficulty begins to increase and uses simple contours and point features.
  • Green are used mostly by experienced under 18’s and adults wanting a short but challenging course with a very hard navigational difficulty.
  • Blue are a longer, more physically demanding course in comparison to the green. The distances are more varied between controls and the course attracts experienced orienteers.
  • Brown & Black are very physically demanding and have a very hard navigational difficulty. They are for experienced orienteers only.
  • Score means visiting as many controls as possible in any order in a specific time, like 45mins.

EOD will be accepted for all courses 

Fees:

Greens, Blues, Browns and Black:
Seniors £12.00, up to 17 May, £14 up to 24 May.
Juniors and Students £4.00 up to 24 May.
No internet entries after 24 May, as there will be EOD - £1 extra for Seniors only.

White, Yellow, Orange, Silver:
Seniors, Juniors and Students £4.00 up to 24 May.

Light Green:
Seniors £8.00, Juniors and Students £4.00 up to 24 May. 

Terrain Description

Fast running on high open fell with large areas of intricate rocky terrain. There is very little bracken and no trees. More climb-per-km than usual is unavoidable.

Facilities

Side Farm tea-room.

Camping is available at Side Farm. 017684 82337. Adults £8, Child £3, car £2, motorcycles £1 (no advance booking, but it has 70 pitches). Dogs on leads. Hot showers and loos. Small campervans taken.
