Day 2 (Sunday 24th May) is returning to a base in the historic Castlefield area of Manchester which will give us the opportunity to run around parts of central Manchester and along the surprisingly numerous canals in the area.

Day 2 details

Day 3 (Bank holiday Monday 25th) we are holding our first Knock out Sprint which will give runners head to head racing on a selection of short courses. The leaders of each "heat" will progress to the next race to determine who will be in the final. All entrants will get to run 3 courses so don't worry about being knocked out in the first round, you'll still get to run twice more.

Day 3 details

The MDOC team are working hard to finalise assembly details for all 3 days to bring you an enjoyable weekend in the spring sun that Manchester can offer.

We are encouraging the use of public transport into Manchester, for example Day 1 assembly is 10 minutes easy walk from Piccadilly Station. Park free in somewhere like Stockport and then take 1 of the 12 trains per hour into the centre. Better still, leave your car at home and take the train all the way.

JOK Chasing Sprint - Great Tower

The JOK Chasing Sprint takes place at Great Tower, near Windermere on Saturday 11th April! Entries are now open via SiEntries and close on Easter Monday: https://www.sientries.co.uk/event.php?event_id=17552

Results will be available soon.

Great Tower is the perfect Lake District forest in miniature - wonderfully clean underfoot and with complex rock and contour detail. The arena will be in the heart of the terrain, with excellent spectating opportunities.

There will be two races, a Prologue and a Chase. The Prologue will have individual start times; the Chase reverses the starting order based on the Prologue results, with the Prologue winners starting first, everyone racing head-to-head, and the first across the Chase finish line taking the title.

The expected winning times are 15-20 minutes for the Prologue and 20-25 minutes for the Chase. Courses will be "forest sprint" style - expect fast running, short legs, lots of controls and intense decision-making.

Previous JOK Chasing Sprint winners include six WOC medalists. Will you add your name to the roll of honour?

The event is paired with the LOC galoppen on the Sunday to make a fantastic weekend of spring orienteering in the South Lakes.

For people unfamiliar with the Overall League Tables:

There's separate tables for gross and handicap scores.

Handicaps are based on age and sex and change every year - we have values for ages from 5 to 100. The factor is derived from a table of 10k world records we found on the internet.

Over the 8-race season, your best 4 scores count.

Organisers and Planners get a yellow blob on their event, and are rewarded with a 4th score equal to their 3rd best.

The "average" column on the end is a good indicator of where people with less than 4 scores at the moment will end up when they get a 4th score.

After each event, please check your results carefully for spelling/club/handicap factor/correct timing and score, and let us know asap of any errors.

Format

A series of 8 events between October and March, plus a 'Cup Final' where trophies and prizes for the 2025-26 series will be presented.

All the events are SCORE events using specially drawn maps, with a time allowance of either 40, 60, or 75 minutes. The control sites will mostly be items of street furniture (telegraph poles, hydrants, green boxes, post boxes etc. - see Typical NSL Controls page for examples). Evidence of your visit will be recorded by the MapRun app (see below), or by noting down a (hopefully obvious) identification mark on an answer sheet supplied at registration. There will be no O-kites and no SI boxes at individual controls, although we will use SI timing for the start and finish.

The controls will have a range of point values, adding an additional dimension to route choice and planning. As usual in score events, there will be (severe!) penalties for exceeding the time limit.

Essential Equipment

a high visibility top (you will not be allowed to start without one, a nd we have a few available to borrow)

dibber (lots available to borrow if necessary)

pen / pencil (maps and answer sheets will be printed on waterproof paper)

torch / head torch

compass (optional)

a backup light and a whistle (or an alternative means of summoning attention / assistance)

NB A mobile phone with a torch app would serve as a backup light AND a means of summoning assistance

Further Information

You may run individually, or in pairs; however, under 16s MUST be accompanied by an adult, and they must stay together at all times - i.e. no shadowing is allowed; 16 and 17 year olds may run unaccompanied, but must have written consent from a parent / guardian.

As the events form a league, scores from each event will be added together to reveal the eventual winners; your best 4 scores from the 8 events will produce your overall total. Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the Handicap Competition.

Newcomers to street league events may find John Britton's words of wisdom helpful:

What are you looking for? The control sites will mostly be items of street furniture e.g. telegraph posts, hydrants, green boxes, post boxes, lampposts etc. Photographs and examples can be seen on our Typical NSL Controls page. It won't be long before TP, LP, H and GB become second nature.

Controls with different values. This seems complicated but is essential for street league to work - it means you have to think carefully about where the value is and how much of it you can get to. One useful thing I always do is to take a highlighter and pick out the top values (the 40s and 50s, say). It takes a few seconds, but gives you a very quick feel for the distribution.

Sensible watches are essential for score events. I always carry a little compass just in case of disorientation. And a spare writing implement - pencils are most effective for waterproof paper.

Thinking time. Even on a 40-minute event it has to be sensible to spend some time thinking about your strategy before charging off. I usually take a good couple of minutes to highlight the values and ponder the consequences before leaving the start. I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do for the first 15-20 minutes, where big decision points might be, and what return route leaves most options available.

Some words of warning ... map scale, number of controls, values of controls, penalty rate are not guaranteed to be the same every week. Check them all before you start, to make sure your decisions are going to be correct for the way each event is set up.

Final details for NSL9 – the Cup Final

Venue: The Parrswood, 356 Parrs Wood Road, Manchester, M20 6JD

Food is straightforward – simply order from the standard menu before your run. Check it out on

    Facebook

So far so normal, however things are always a bit different for the Cup Final.

Everyone runs the same event - and scoring is based on points per second. If you are out less than 40mins, it counts as 40mins; if you are out more than 60mins you lose points at a rate of 1 point every second. So basically, you should try to finish as soon as your scoring is slowing down, and certainly before 60mins.

The on-the-night handicapping is done so the winner of the Hydrant trophy will be the one of our regulars who does better than their typical season so far.

The evening also features presentations of all the season’s trophies.

The start beep will be found at the front gate, on the corner; the finish beep at the pub front door.

One special note on the map: the footpaths alongside the tramline are only accessible from places marked with the black-blob “access point” symbol. Take care to study the map before you run to understand which places are the access points to these paths.

On the night registration from 5:30 to 7.00pm. Starts as soon as it is dark.

The event will be a MapRun event, enabling use of the MapRun app on your phone or the MapRunG app on to your watch.

If you are new to the system, please read the instructions on our website.

and download the MapRun apps to your phone or watch. The event files will be available a few days before the event. You are strongly advised to download everything you need before you arrive at the event.

As usual at our NSL Maprun events, a traditional paper-based backup will be available for those who request it.

Start and Finish will be timed using SI as usual.

Registration

NEW THIS YEAR ... To enter the event, everyone should pre-enter using the RaceSignUp system https://racesignup.co.uk/. Just select the event, pick which of the 40/60 options you want to do. This entry process takes your money, so no more queuing to pay on the night - should you need to withdraw, RaceSignUp allows that and gives you a credit for a future event.

Entries will remain open until the event is over, but you won't get a personalised clue sheet or a guarantee of a map if you leave it past midnight two days before (ie. Tuesday).

If you are going to run as a pair, you both need to enter the event - all runners will receive a map and be charged for it (£6 seniors, £3 juniors).

We would prefer to avoid entries on the day, but will have a limited number of maps available and can take cash or card payments.

Registration on the night opens at about 5.30pm, with start times between 6 and 7.30pm. Fee £6/£3.

The event will be a MapRun event, enabling use of the MapRun app on your phone or the MapRunG app on your watch.

If you are new to the system, please read the instructions on our website and download the MapRun apps to your phone or watch, as good internet cannot be guaranteed at all venues. The event files will be available a few days before the event. You are strongly advised to download everything you need before you arrive at the event.

Registration

NEW THIS YEAR ... To enter the event, everyone should pre-enter using the RaceSignUp system https://racesignup.co.uk/. Just select the event, pick which of the 40/60/75 options you want to do.

Sun for Tuesday events, Tuesday for Thursday events).

If you are going to run as a pair, you both need to enter the event - all runners will receive a map and be charged for it (£6 seniors, £3 juniors).

We would prefer to avoid entries on the day, but will have a limited number of maps available and can take cash or card payments.

Remember

you don't have to use MapRun - you can just fill in the answers on your cluesheet

in the (unlikely ?) event of a missing "beep" at a control, MapRunners MUST record a written response on their clue sheet.

you get points if you get a beep or if you write the answer down. Simples.

photos of typical control sites can be seen on the Typical NSL Controls webpage

final details - including a copy of the Safety Notice, and the safety map will be emailed to all pre-entries after entries have closed - they will not be available at registration.
