Pre Event Info

Score event with 40 minute, 60 minute or 75 minute time limit. Under 16s MUST be accompanied by an adult. 16 and 17 year olds can compete alone but ONLY with written consent from parent/guardian. Lights essential (+ back-up). High-visibility clothing compulsory.

Wythenshawe town centre is a new area for NSL, which offers plenty of route choice. The area is bounded to the north by the M60, to the west by the M56, to the south by the airport relief road, and to the east by Peel Park (sort of). In recent years, much of the council housing here has been replaced by new developments. It’s a surprisingly verdant area, with several parks and open spaces, and many roads having grass verges.

Venue: Silver Birch, Poundswick Lane, Wythenshawe, M22 9PQ

The event will be based at the Silver Birch, a Holt's pub on Painswick Lane, M22 9PQ on the NW edge of Wythenshawe Town Centre. It is barely 100m from Wythenshawe Interchange which offers bus and tram services, and any international competitors will find it particularly convenient as it's on the Metro line from the airport.

The event will be a MapRun event, enabling use of the MapRun6 app on your phone or the MapRunG app on to your watch.

If you are new to the system, please read the instructions on our website

and download the MapRun apps to your phone or watch.  The event files will be available a few days before the event. You are strongly advised to download everything you need before you arrive at the event.

As usual at our NSL Maprun events, a traditional paper-based backup will be available for those who request it.

Start and Finish will be timed using SI as usual.

Pre-registration and entry

To enter the event, everyone should pre-register using the MDOC Registration System https://mdocentry.org.uk. Choose a start block, and hire a dibber if required.  This process will guarantee that a map is available for you on the night.

If you are running as a pair, you both need to pre-enter the event.

Entries will close at midnight on Sunday 20th November.

We would prefer to avoid entry on the day (EOD) but a limited number of maps may be available. Please do NOT rely on it.

On the night registration will be based in the pub. You will need to pick up your personalised clue sheet and a dibber (if requested) and pay for your entry. Our preferred system of payment is by contactless card - using the Zettle system. Cash payments will be possible, but not encouraged.

Please note that all runners will receive a map, and will be charged for it (£4 senior, £2 junior);  additional maps (for people running in pairs) will be charged at £2.

Parking

The police have requested that we park in the Forum car park which is at ground level and free after 5pm. The pub is visible from the northern end of this car park, and is barely 100m away.  Access to the Forum car park is from the south, off Simonsway.

The police have requested that we leave no valuables on show in our cars. This guidance would apply to any area and is not specific to Wythenshawe. The police offered no other safety guidance for the event.

Food

The pub offers an array of beers (from £3.25/pint for Holt’s draught bitter) but doesn't normally offer food. However, they have agreed to provide a choice of beef stew or mild chicken curry for the modest price of £4. Both will be served with a chunk of ‘Tiger’ bread to soak up the juices. So that they can order in and prepare an appropriate amount of food, if you would like to eat please email by 20:00 on Friday 18 November with your selection. On the day, collect a raffle ticket at Registration and when you’re ready to eat present it at the bar with a payment of £4, cash preferred please.
If the choice of food on offer doesn’t suit you, the Asda in the town centre is open until 22:00 and is only 6 minutes’ walk from the pub and even less from parking. But do please stay for a drink and a chat at the pub. It recently won a Special Recognition Award from Holt’s brewery, and the landlady Trisha and her son Chris have been particularly helpful.

Remember

  • you don't have to use MapRun - you can just fill in the answers on your cluesheet,

  • in the (unlikely ?) event of a missing "beep" at a control, MapRunners MUST record a written response on their clue sheet.

  • you get points if you get a beep or if you write the answer down. Simples.

  • photos of typical control sites can be seen on the Typical NSL Controls webpage,

  • final details - including a copy of the Safety Notice, and the safety map will be emailed to all pre-entries after entries have closed - they will not be available at registration.
